RECAP: Gee-Gees advance to OUA Quarterfinal with decisive win over Laurentian
The Gee-Gees women's basketball team got the postseason started on Wednesday night in Montpetit Hall. Hosting Laurentian for the third consecutive opening playoff round, Ottawa earned a 79-49 win to advance to the OUA Quarterfinal round.
Ottawa was hot from beyond the arch, shooting 52.2% percent from the three-point line. Ariane Saumure led the Gee-Gees with four made three-pointers, totalling 14 points on the evening. Melina De lulio tied the game high 14 points, logging eight rebounds and three assists to go with it.
Despite the 30-point victory, the Gee-Gees still gave away 27 turnovers.
"We played really well as a team, but we definitely need to clean up the turnovers," Saumure said.
"That number of turnovers is not what we're expecting every game," Ottawa head coach, Rose-Anne Joly added. "I know that I can trust my team. Against pressure we're actually not turning the ball over as much, when we play against teams that aren't pressuring us as much it can actually be harder to play."
The Gee-Gees head to Waterloo to take on the Warriors in the OUA Quarterfinal. Last season, Ottawa's season ended at Waterloo.
"What happened in quarterfinals against Waterloo last year was not acceptable and we did lose to Waterloo during the season this year," Joly said. "We prepared for what they brought, but this time it's going to be different."
The quarterfinal game tips off at 6p.m. at Waterloo on Feb. 24.
