The Ottawa Gee-Gees women's basketball kicked off their OUA regular season at home with a 77-54 win over Windsor on Friday and a 92-57 win over Western on Saturday.
With the wins, Ottawa improves their overall record including an undefeated preseason to a spotless 7-0.
On Friday, Natsuki Szczokin led four Ottawa scorers in double figures, with a well-rounded 15 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Alissa Provo and Allie McCarthy added 13 points apiece, and Emily Payne added 10 points and seven rebounds in the lopsided win.
A key difference maker in the game was in the turnover margin with the Lancers turning the ball over 25 times that the Gee-Gees turned into 21 points. Overall, Ottawa averaged just shy of 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from three in the win.
On Saturday, it was an even more dominant performance over the Mustangs. Ottawa built a big lead on a key performance from second year forward Victoria Brideau.
Brideau led the Gee-Gees with 17 points, five steals, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Szczokin added 14 points, eight assists, and five steals, while Payne had 15 points and four blocks. Off the bench, Bailey Russell had 11 points and four rebounds in 18 minutes of action.
What They're Saying:
"I think the preseason was our foundation, the past two years we struggled, but this year it was our number one goal to do well and get the season off to a good start. We have 11 returners this year, which is a big change from the past three years. Even with the results this weekend, it's one game at a time, we don't take any team for granted." – Gee-Gees head coach Rose-Anne Joly.
What's Next:
The Gee-Gees will take to the road as they visit Waterloo for matchups with the Laurier Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively. Both games will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
