The U SPORTS third-ranked Gee-Gees women's basketball team logged two key home wins over McMaster and Guelph. On Friday night, Ottawa defeated the then 7-1 Marauders by a final score of 67-49, before besting the ninth-ranked Guelph 73-60 on Saturday night at Montpetit Hall.
On Friday, the Marauders took an early 14-13 lead after the first quarter, which Ottawa responded to by outscoring McMaster 23-4 in the second quarter to establish a 36-18 at halftime.
Allie McCarthy and Natsuki Szczokin led the way for the Gee-Gees with 12 points each. Szczokin added an outstanding nine steals on the night, tying her own school record set earlier this season.
Against a Top 10 ranked foe the following night, Ottawa was able to notch a gritty win against the Gryphons. The key difference maker was Guelph's 22 turnovers that resulted in 20 points for the Gee-Gees.
McCarthy put forth an outstanding all-around effort, leading the way with 18 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Szczokin once again packed her stat line with 17 points, five steals, four rebounds, and two assists. Alissa Provo rounded out other scorers in double-figures with 11 points in the win.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"We've found our rhythm a bit without Emily [Payne], hopefully she'll be back next weekend, but people stepped up. Natsuki again was so consistent, being in her last year she wants to win, Allie is so competitive and wants to win. Defensively, there was a huge difference, I'm very proud of our girls." – Rose-Anne Joly, Gee-Gees head coach.
