PLAYOFF PREVIEW: #4 Women’s basketball set to welcome #8 Windsor Lancers to Montpetit for OUA semifinal
Taking down the Queen's Gaels in a dominant 71-52 performance, the #4 University of Ottawa women's basketball team claimed their place in the OUA semifinal where they will host the #8 Windsor Lancers at Montpetit Hall to compete for a spot in the OUA Championship.
The upcoming matchup is reminiscent of the beginning of the season. Back on Oct. 25, the Gee-Gees hosted the Lancers in their home opener. The contest went in favour of the Gee-Gees, who took a 77-54 win to start the season.
This time around, the Lancers are coming off a 73-67 OUA quarterfinal victory over the Guelph Gryphons and look to continue their playoff push against the Gee-Gees. Kali Grootenboer was the top performer for the Lancers, scoring the game high 22 points off the bench.
For the Gee-Gees, it was Allie McCarthy who led the way in their OUA quarterfinal battle. McCarthy finished the game with 20 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Accompanied by point guard, Natsuki Szczokin, and aggressive post play by Emily Payne, Ottawa has established seamless scoring ability.
Ottawa forced 21 turnovers by Queen's and logged 20 points off turnovers throughout the game. The team also logged eight fast break points, showcasing their speed in transition.
In Ottawa and Windsor's previous meeting, the Lancers suffered 25 turnovers. The Lancers will have to focus on protecting the ball in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Tip-off for the OUA semifinal is scheduled for 6:00pm on Mar. 1. Tickets are available https://www.showpass.com/gee-gees-basketball-fw/
