The Gee-Gees women's hockey team was able to bounce back in impressive fashion, beating the Concordia Stingers 4-1 after falling to the Montreal Carabins. That brings the Gee-Gees record to 3-3 after the first six games.
On Friday the Gee-Gees hosted the Montreal Carabins, hoping to carry forward the momentum after a convincing win over Bishop's University the weekend prior. It was not to be as the Carabins finished the first period up by two. Despite their best efforts, the Gee-Gees couldn't beat Montreal netminder Maude Trevisan through two periods of play. There was late hope for the Gee-Gees as Alice Fillion scored her second of the season with less than 30 seconds left in the game. The game finished 3-1 with the Carabins scoring on the empty net.
The Garnet and Grey had a day off on Saturday before hosting Concordia on Sunday. After a slow first period, the second started with a flurry of goals. The Stingers scored within 40 seconds of puck drop as a silky behind the back pass by Audrey Belzile found Stephanie Lalancette before sliding it in front to Marie-Pascale Bernier to open the scoring. The Gee-Gees came roaring back, scoring 20 seconds later as Arianne Gagnon stole the puck and placed a perfect shot under the blocker of Alice Philbert for her first Gee-Gees goal. The Gee-Gees would add another before the break as Alyssa MacMillan capped off a nice passing play on the powerplay. The Garnet and Grey would add two empty netters, including McMillan's second of the game to beat the Stingers, 4-1, for the second time this season.
"Concordia is a really talented team, and they bring it to us every game we've met them so far, I think our girls are just rising to the occasion," said Stefanie McKeough, Gee-Gees assistant coach. "We talked to the girls about being disciplined and the things they could control in the game."
The Gee-Gees will be back in action Friday, Nov. 19 when they travel to Carleton at 7 p.m. before returning home to host the McGill Martlets Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
