The University of Ottawa women's hockey team beat the McGill Martlets, the number one ranked team in the country, 3-2, after a tough night against Carleton. The Ravens beat the Gee-Gees 2-1 on home ice for the second time this season.
The Gee-Gees entered the weekend hoping to carry their momentum forward after beating the Concordia Stingers the previous weekend. They travelled to take on cross-town rivals, the Carleton Ravens. The Ravens would open the scoring on the powerplay thanks to Nicole MacNeil's shot that beat Aurélie Dubuc. The Gee-Gees would answer back through Katherine Birkby, her first of the season. The Ravens would score again halfway through the third to end the game with a 2-1 lead and draw level with the Garnet and Grey on points.
The Gee-Gees faced a tough task on Sunday, hosting the number one ranked team in the country, the McGill Martlets. The scoring was stated early as Birkby found herself with an empty net, 40 seconds into the game, after a funny bounce of the boards. The Martlets didn't wait long as Jade Downie-Landry scored less than 30 seconds later, rifling it past Mahika Sarrazin. The rookie netminder was the star of the show, making a number of athletic saves throughout the first, keeping her team in it. The Gee-Gees had their powerplay working as Kathleen Reedman had snuck down the right point to slam home a rebound opportunity. It was the Mississauga, Ont. Native's first of her Gee-Gees career. The Martlets would score a powerplay goal of their own to send the teams into the break tied.
The third started with the Gee-Gees buzzing, generating several opportunities. They were finally able to break through thanks to Birkby's second of the game, coming on the powerplay. Despite Martlets pressure, Sarrazin was outstanding, stopping all that came her way, holding on for her second win of the season.
"She played great," said Chelsea Grills, Gee-Gees head coach. "That's one of our strengths, our goalies and it was nice to see her get the win."
The Gee-Gees are back in action Friday, Nov. 26 when they host Bishop's University at 7 p.m. travelling for a rematch with the Montreal Carabin on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m.
