The University of Ottawa Women's hockey team beat Bishop's University 5-2 after a convincing performance Friday, Nov. 26. They then travelled to Montreal dropping a tight game 1-0 as the Garnet and Grey fall to fourth in the RSEQ standings.
The Gee-Gees came into the weekend hoping to separate themselves from the teams lower in the standings and build on their win over McGill the previous weekend. The Garnet and Grey got off a bright start scoring two goals in less than a minute. Arianne Gagnon scored her second of the season after a nice passing play between Alice Fillion and Ariane Aubin with Katherine Birkby extending her goal-scoring streak under forty seconds later. The Gee-Gees followed this with two powerplay goals to start the second with Aubin combining with Fillion and Gagnon again before Sophie Gareau tapped in a rebound to push the game to 4-0. Bishop's would score on a powerplay of their own before the end of the period. Angélique Pagé's shot opened the scoring in the third. Kathleen Reedman would score her second goal in as many games to end any hopes the Gaiters had of a comeback.
The Garnet and Grey would then travel to Montreal to take on the Carabins for the second time this season. In a game where Montreal was the better team for large stretches, they couldn't beat Gee-Gees rookie goaltender Mahika Sarrazin. In her third start of the season, Sarrazin stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced. With less than three minutes left in the game, Kaleigh Quennec broke the deadlock on the powerplay as the Carabin went on to win.
"There is so much parody in the RSEQ that you almost have to expect [how close it is], we try not to focus too much on the wins and loses but on the process," said Greg Bowles, Gee-Gees assistant coach. "Coach Grills is really big on the process and if we do the right things then the wins will come."
The Gee-Gees are back in action Friday, Dec. 3 from Montreal as they take on Concordia at 7 p.m. before returning to the Minto Sports Complex to host the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.
