The University of Ottawa women's hockey team wrapped up the first half of their season on Sunday, Dec. 5, with a 5-2 victory over their cross-town rivals, the Carleton Ravens. The win came off the back of a disappointing 5-1 loss to the Concordia Stingers on Friday, Dec. 3.
The Gee-Gees travelled to Concordia for the second time this year to take on a Stingers team they were yet to lose to. The Garnet and Grey opened the scoring early in the first period as Ariane Aubin found herself all alone in the high slot to rifle home her third goal of the year. The Stingers would come roaring back, scoring four unanswered goals in the second, including two by Emmy Fecteau, before netting their fifth at the start of the third period.
Looking to improve upon Friday's performance, the Gee-Gees hosted the Carleton Ravens. Angelique Proulx would open the scoring as she crept down the half wall on the powerplay, her first as a Gee-Gee. The Ravens answered back shortly after on a powerplay of their own. Jade Todd would restore the Gee-Gees lead, scoring shorthanded, after picking up a puck that was ringed around the boards by Christine Deaudelin. The Ravens would level things up again before the end of the period thanks to another powerplay goal. That is where the scoring would end for the Ravens, as the Gee-Gees would score three unanswered in the second and third periods. The top line for the Garnet and Grey took over. Arianne Gagnon would tap in her third of the year, finishing off a passing play between Alice Fillion and Ariane Aubin. Aubin herself would add two more before the end of the evening. Mahika Sarrazin stopped 14 of 16 shots she faced on route to her third win of the season.
"It was nice to see Todd and Proulx get rewarded," said Chelsea Grills, Gee-Gees head coach.
"It's a process, we are building and growing as a squad," she continued. "We are a young group and there are a lot of positives to take from the first half of the season."
The Gee-Gees will be off for the rest of December but return to action on Jan. 9, when they travel to Montreal to take on the McGill Martlets. They return home the following weekend to host the Montreal Carabins on Jan. 16.
