RECAP: Women’s hockey clinches third, to wrap up regular season with home-and-home versus Gaiters

The Gee-Gees women's hockey team saw another split this weekend, facing off against the Carleton Ravens (4-3) and Concordia Stingers (1-3).

On Friday, women's hockey faced off against their crosstown rival at the Carleton Ice House.

Alyssa Biesenthal registered a hat trick, while Katherine Birkby also found the back of the net as the Gee-Gees erased a two-goal deficit to take the victory. Biesenthal now has 11 goals and 17 points on the season, trailing Abygail Moloughney in both categories for the team lead.

Moloughney herself notched a pair of assists and now sits on 26 points for the season, good for fourth in the conference. Her 16 goals are second in the RSEQ.

On Sunday, the Gee-Gees celebrated their seniors and graduating players before hitting the ice at home against the Concordia Stingers.

While Concordia opened the scoring, the Gee-Gees bounced back a few minutes later tie it up. Biesenthal continued her scoring streak by taking control of the ice, capitalizing on a rush with a backhand roofer to get the Gee-Gees on the board.

Concordia then scored late in the first, and later added another powerplay tally to make the final score 3-1.

Ottawa clinched third place in the conference with their results over the weekend. The RSEQ playoff matchups are now set; Concordia will host Bishop's and Montreal is hosting the Gee-Gees.

The Gee-Gees will begin a final tune-up before the playoffs with a home-and-home against the Gaiters. The teams will faceoff at the Minto Sports Complex for a rare midweek affair on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and then head to Lennoxville, Que., for the return leg on Friday, Feb. 17. The Wednesday matchup is a makeup game after the teams' Jan. 13 confrontation was postponed.

Despite Ottawa holding an advantage in the standings, the teams have played each other tight this season. Two of the three games played thus far have been one goal affairs, although the Gee-Gees skated to a comfortable 3-1 win in their most recent game on Jan. 29.

Moloughney got two goals in that matchup, with Ottawa holding a 32-24 edge in shots.
