The Gee-Gees women's hockey team was hard at work over the weekend. Ottawa fell 3-1 to Montreal before returning home for a game with the #1 nationally ranked team, the Concordia Stingers.
Friday night's matchup in Montreal went in favour of the Carabins from start to finish. Montreal earned a pair of powerplay goals in the opening 20 minutes as the Gee-Gees served eight minutes worth of penalties in the first period.
Montreal found the mesh once more in the second period to take a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
Kathleen Reedman managed to sneak in a powerplay goal in the final moments of the game, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome as the Gee-Gees fell 3-1 to start the weekend.
After earning the assists on Reedman's goal, Maëlle Laplante went on to log two goals and an assist against Concordia.
"After our loss on Friday night, we were obviously bummed out at the outcome. I think we put up a great effort and knew we were competitive," Laplante said. "We wanted to make sure to come back stronger this Sunday, and we did."
The Gee-Gees were first on the board with a powerplay goal by Arianne Gagnon. Laplante followed with an unassisted puck that slid underneath the Stinger's goalie.
The 2-0 lead was cut in half by the Stingers at the beginning of the second period, and early into the third, things were all tied up.
After a third period full of highlights, two overtimes were needed to decide the game. The Stingers came away with a 5-4 win in the end, but not without being tested by the Gee-Gees.
Greg Bowles, Co-Coach of the Gee-Gees noted the importance of the games aside from the outcomes.
"Games are never necessarily about the wins and the losses but it's always about the process and the girls took a big step today," Bowles said. "It's an amazing group, they're sticking together and putting in the effort and you're starting to see the results."
The Gee-Gees will be on the road against McGill on Nov. 18 for a 3 p.m. puck drop but will be playing at TD Place Arena on Nov. 19th against their crosstown rivals. The Gee-Gees will be defending the Alerts Cup in the Colonel By Classic at 3 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on Ticketmaster.
