The Gee-Gees women's hockey team hosted the Bishop's University Gaiters in a Friday night 5-1 loss before hitting the road to take on the University of Montreal Carabins on Sunday afternoon, dropping the game 3-2 to the Carabins.
A quiet opening 20 minutes was followed by a pair of goals by the Gaiters in the second period. After the Gaiters found an early third period goal, Molly Heighington put the Gee-Gees on the board. The goal marked her first U SPORTS point. The Gaiters were quick to respond, adding another two scores before the final buzzer went off.
"We need to bare down and execute on our chances," said Gee-Gees rookie, Keara Merriman shifting focus to the team's Sunday afternoon matchup.
No goals were scored up until the very last minute of the first period. Shelby Calof, joining the Gee-Gees from Syracuse in December, pulled through and scored a powerful and precise first goal.
Ottawa co-coach, Greg Bowles, noted Calof's leadership and talent.
"She brings a certain leadership," Bowles said. "She is pretty worldly, it's fantastic."
The second period began with Montreal attempting to respond, but Ottawa goaltender, Mahika Sarrazin, remained unscathed until the final half of the second period.
Finding a pair of goals, the Carabins closed the second period leading 2-1.
Ottawa's offence started the third period on fire. Both teams struggled to beat the goalies on either side. Alyssa Biesenthal managed to even out the score, unassisted on the powerplay.
The Carabins wasted no time, adding a goal only a minute later to reclaim the 3-2 lead.
As Montreal kept the victory at home, the Gee-Gees must now move on and prepare to take on the top-ranked Concordia Stingers on the road.
