The Gee-Gees were tested in an overtime battle against the #1 Concordia Stingers on home ice on Friday night before crossing the river and taking on the Carleton Ravens in a back-and-forth rivalry matchup the next evening.
While Ottawa fell 3-2 to Concordia after a short overtime period, it was the Gee-Gees who started the game ahead.
Shelby Calof was quick to log an unassisted goal for the Gee-Gees, navigating through two defenders before scoring off a cheeky backhand.
The top ranked team in the nation did not allow the Gee-Gees to get comfortable and pocketed a pair of goals in the second period to gain the 2-1 lead heading into the last 20 minutes of regulation.
Again, it was Calof's explosiveness that put a goal on the scoreboard for Ottawa. After 12 more minutes, the buzzer signalled for overtime.
This was the second time the Gee-Gees took the Stingers to overtime, proving to be a challenge for the undefeated team. This time, it took only 16 seconds for the Stingers to put an end to the game.
The following night, Ottawa visited their crosstown rivals for an evening puck-drop. With a 3-1 win, the Gee-Gees put an end to their seven-game losing streak.
The Ravens opened up the scoring within the first two minutes of play, capitalizing on an early Gee-Gees penalty. The 1-0 lead held until Kate Maclean snuck the puck past the Carleton goaltender 14 minutes into the second, tying things up at 1-1.
The Gee-Gees were given a pair of powerplay opportunities in the last 10 minutes of play. The Ravens were able to kill off the first, but Katherine Birkby took advantage of a rebound Infront of the net, scoring with 16 seconds left of their second man advantage.
With only three minutes left to play, Maclean managed to find another goal, stealing the puck from the Ravens' goaltender, and sending it right back into the net to make it a 3-1 lead for the Gee-Gees.
The Gee-Gees are back at home on Jan. 25 for a Thursday night battle with the McGill Martlets. Tickets for the 7 p.m. puck drop are available at https://teams.geegees.ca/tickets.
