The Gee-Gees women's hockey team started the weekend on home ice, earning an exciting 3-0 win over the McGill Martlets. Days later, the team took on Bishop's University, getting shutout 6-0 by the Gaiters.
Thursday night's matchup began with a scoreless first period, but the Gee-Gees came out and established a quick 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the second period.
Florence Lessard was first on the board, sneaking the puck under the arm of the McGill goaltender. Only moments later, Kate MacLean scored off the faceoff to make it 2-0.
The scoring didn't end there. Alyssa Biesenthal poked the puck through, adding a third goal to the Gee-Gees' lead.
Another scoreless period meant a 3-0 shutout win for the Gee-Gees. Ottawa goalie, Mahika Sarrazin was flawless, stopping all 36 shots sent her way.
"We played really well as a team tonight," Lessard said. "We played really well both offensively and defensively, our effort showed up on the ice."
The Gee-Gees played a much different game on Sunday afternoon, falling into a three-goal deficit in the first period. The Gaiters carried their goalscoring momentum into the next period, taking only a minute to extend their lead to 4-0.
Plagued by penalties, the Gee-Gees found themselves down 6-0 by the end of the second period, giving up a pair of goals while shorthanded.
Ottawa stopped the bleeding but were unable to get the puck past their opponents, ultimately losing 6-0.
The Gee-Gees are on the road for their next four games, starting with a Friday night matchup against the Montreal Carabins on Feb. 2.
"It's going to be a challenge to be on the road for that long, but we have the team and the ability to pick up wins and move forwards," said Lessard.
The team will close out the season with a rematch against the Gaiters on Feb. 16 on home ice.
