The University of Ottawa women's hockey team crossed town to take on the Carleton Ravens at the Ice House on Friday night. Falling 5-2 to their crosstown rivals, the team headed to Montreal for their last road game of the regular season. The McGill Martlets bested the Gee-Gees in overtime, showing a 4-3 final score.
The Ravens established a two-goal lead in the opening 20 minutes, logging 14 shots against the Gee-Gees in the first period. Only 55 seconds out of the first intermission, the Ravens extended their lead to 3-0.
In the final minutes of the second period, a powerplay opportunity gave the Gee-Gees a boost. Reece Mepham hammered the puck from deep, putting Ottawa on the board.
Things looked up for the Gee-Gees as Arianne Gagnon struck the net only a minute into the third period.
With 3-2 on the board, the Ravens logged an insurance goal partway through the third period. With over three minutes left to play, the Gee-Gees opted to pull their goalie.
The extra skater put pressure on the Ravens, but it didn't take long for them to get past the Gee-Gees and close the game with an empty net goal.
The 5-2 Ravens victory keeps Carleton's playoff hopes alive while adding pressure to Ottawa to be perfect in the final games of the season.
The opening period was tough on the Gee-Gees as the Martlets logged a pair of powerplay goals. With only two seconds left on the clock, McGill fired in a third goal to close the period up 3-0.
Ottawa slowly picked away at the deficit. Arianne Gagnon was first to score for the Garnet and Grey, finding the net midway through the second.
In the third, Beatrice Bilodeau only needed 30 seconds to hit the mesh. Katherine Birkby took advantage of the Gee-Gees man advantage in the final moments of regulation, scoring a third goal and sending the game to overtime.
The Gee-Gees overtime hopes were shut down quickly. The Martlets scored 45 seconds into overtime, taking the game 4-3.
