First Hall of Fame Inductees Announced for Gee-Gees Women’s Hockey
The inaugural class of inductees for the Gee-Gees Women's Hockey Hall of Fame will celebrate the contributions of two program builders and a historic All-Canadian forward, all of whom have made an indelible mark on the program's history.
Kim (Kerr) Brent will be inducted in the athlete category, alongside Shelley Coolidge and Bob Bowes in the builder category.
The inductees will be celebrated at a Hall of Fame ceremony on campus on Saturday, November 23, as part of the program's 25th anniversary season.
Kim (Kerr) Brent was a member of the 2003-04 conference championship team which also went on to capture the national silver medal. That was the forward's first season in Garnet and Grey, and she would lead the team in points over the next four straight seasons.
Brent became the program's first player to be named to the All-Canadian team in 2004-05 when she recorded 17 points (6-11) over a 15-game regular season. She remains the program's only player to be named a two-time All-Canadian, earning a spot again in 2005-06 with a career-best 20 points (12-8), again over 15 games.
At 0.8 goals per game, Brent's 2005-06 season ranks fourth in program history, while her career regular season goals total of 41 ranks second. She was a four-time conference all-star, earning the honours in 2006-07 and 2007-08 in addition to her All-Canadian seasons.
Shelley Coolidge was the Gee-Gees head coach from 2003 to 2009, and she holds the program record for most playoff victories. Coolidge's Gee-Gees made four appearances at the national championship tournament, bringing the program to national prominence.
Coolidge was named the conference Coach of the Year in 2003-04 and four times guided the team to the conference final, winning the banner in 2003-04 and capturing silver medals in 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2008-09. Coolidge's career regular season record with uOttawa is 48-38-5-10 (.475 winning percentage), with 14 postseason victories.
A past president of the U SPORTS Women's Hockey Coaching Association, Coolidge was an assistant coach at the 2009 World University Winter Games where Canada won the first ever gold medal in women's hockey.
Bob Bowes has been a member of the Gee-Gees women's hockey team since 2004, marking 20 years with the team this coming season. Beginning his involvement with the team as a fitness testing and conditioning volunteer, Bowes soon took over the duties of equipment manager and has travelled with the team consistently since 2006, rarely missing a game or practice.
Bowes was a member of three conference silver-medal winning teams and three national championship tournament appearances. Bowes, who graduated from the University of Ottawa in 1977 with a Masters in Science in Human Kinetics, is being recognized for his long-time commitment as well as his hard-working and motivating character. For twenty years he has been a supportive, positive influence on the Gee-Gees team atmosphere.
