The Gee-Gees women's hockey team faced a tall task against two Top 10 teams in Toronto and Guelph. Ottawa was unable to improve on their hot start as Toronto secured the 4-2 win on Friday, and Guelph took the 3-1 win on Saturday.
On Friday, fourth-year forward Arianne Gagnon put on a show once again, scoring twice as the Gee-Gees held a 2-1 lead into the later stages of the third period. The Varsity Blues fired back in a flurry and scored twice in less than a minute to reclaim the lead before capping off the win.
On Saturday, after an even first period, Guelph drew first blood just short of five minutes into the second period. It was Gagnon once again that found the back of the net to tie up the game. A Gryphons goal at 11:13 of the second had the Gee-Gees playing catch up for the reminder of the game. A power play tally for the Gryphons in the third period secured their win.
Despite the results, the Gee-Gees looked extremely competitive with teams that represent some of the best in the OUA and the nation. Gagnon has proven to be the runaway top scorer of the start of the season with seven goals in four games, double the next closest scorers.
Sitting at 2-2, the Gee-Gees are third in the OUA East behind Toronto and Nipissing through the first two weeks of play.
What They're Saying:
"Playing against two of the top teams not only in the country but in the league, we get a good gauge of where we're at. Obviously, you have to learn a lot from it, it was a good test both days." – Ali Domenico, Gee-Gees Head Coach.
