The Minto Sports Complex was filled with fans for the 2024 Mélisa Kingsley Memorial Game on Saturday afternoon. Following a beautiful ceremonial puck drop featuring Mélisa's mother, brother, and Gee-Gees goaltender, Mélisa's sister, Mireille Kingsley, the Gee-Gees took on the visiting Windsor Lancers.
The opening period saw a lot of time spent in Ottawa's defensive zone as the Gee-Gees suffered a pair of penalties early in the contest. Great play by the team's penalty kill unit and Mireille Kingsley's reactiveness kept the game even at 0-0 after the first 20 minutes.
Partway through the second, the Lancers logged the first goal of the game. The Gee-Gees put pressure on the attack, outshooting the Lancers. Still, Windsor had a 1-0 lead heading into the third period.
A fast paced third period showcased the best from both teams. Again, the Gee-Gees were getting plenty of pucks on net. With only 1:18 left on the clock, Gee-Gees leading scorer, Arianne Gagnon, capitalized on a rebound to score.
With 1-1 on the board, overtime was needed to decide this one.
Alyssa Biesenthal scored the game winner, taking the puck down the ice and sending it over the shoulder of the Windsor goaltender.
The Gee-Gees overtime win improves their record to 6-4 as they head into the last games before the winter break. Next, the Gee-Gees host the Carleton Ravens on Nov. 28 before meeting their rivals again on Nov. 30 at TD Place.
