The University of Ottawa women's hockey team hit the ice for a Friday night showdown with the Laurier Golden Hawks to get the second half of the OUA season started. On Saturday afternoon, the TMU Bold took on the Gee-Gees.
The Gee-Gees split games on home ice.
Earlier in the season, the Gee-Gees defeated the Golden Hawks with a comfortable 6-2 score. This time around, the Golden Hawks earned a 3-2 overtime victory.
Ottawa head coach Ali Domineco acknowledged the difference in the games.
"Last time we played them, we played a whole 60 minutes. That wasn't really the case tonight," Domineco said. "They're a really tough opponent and they played from start to finish."
Alyssa Biesenthal snagged the opening goal for Ottawa. A dish from Gillian Warren in the corner gave Biesenthal a wide-open lane, giving the Gee-Gees a 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Hawks took their time, evening up the score late into the second period. A screen on Gee-Gees goaltender, Mireille Kingsley, gave the Golden Hawks the chance they needed to get the puck in the net.
The start of the third welcomed some drama. A deep shot from Maelle Laplante hit the mesh but was quickly waved off. Play continued, and at the next whistle, the officials discussed the goal.
Deemed a goal, the Gee-Gees reclaimed the lead with 19:22 left on the clock. Ottawa was forced to bring out the penalty kill unit after being charged with four minutes for head contact. Laurier used the opportunity, tying things up once again.
The 2-2 score held to the end of regulation, forcing overtime. The Golden Hawks kept the momentum, scoring the overtime game winner.
The Gee-Gees were back at Minto Sports Complex to take on the TMU Bold, another team they previously defeated (Oct. 25, 2024).
The Bold scored the first of the afternoon, carrying a 1-0 lead until 3:59 into the second when Florence Lessard cashed in a loose rebound.
Ottawa claimed their first lead of the game with a perfect one timer from Gillian Warren but TMU only needed a minute to respond and even up the score at 2-2.
The Gee-Gees closed things out with a strong third period. Angelique Proulx and Biesenthal contributed goals to make it a 4-2 victory for the home squad.
The Gee-Gees are on the road next weekend, taking on the OUA leaders, the Nipissing Lakers on Jan. 18 before heading to Toronto to face the York Lions on Jan. 19. The team returns home on Jan. 24 to host the Windsor Lancers.
