The Gee-Gees women's soccer team achieved another six-point weekend by defeating Trent (2-9-4) on Sunday afternoon, at Gee-Gees Field. The final score of 3-1 was indicative of the flow of play as the Gee-Gees (12-1-1) were once again the better team on the field.
The victory ensures that Ottawa will finish first in the OUA East standings, as the Gee-Gees hold a nine-point edge over the second place Queen's Gaels who earned a pair of ties this weekend. Two games remain in the regular season for both Ottawa and Queen's who will meet on Sunday.
The game started out strong for the Gee-Gees, as they controlled the ball and the tempo of the game. It took until the 23rd minute for them to capitalize off their pressure, when Mikayla Morton did some nice work down the wing that lead to a cross for Sophie Curtis, who headed home her first goal of the season.
The game continued to be all Ottawa in the first half with multiple scoring chances as they were constantly threatening Trent's backline. Near the end of the half they were rewarded again after Lauren Da Luz curl a low shot from a really wide angle that beat the Trent keeper at the far post.
The second half was a more contested battle then the first one. Curtis scored her second of the game off a counter attack from Kaitlyn Ball. The low driven finish put the Gee-Gees up 3-0 and from then on they buckled down to play hard defence and see the game out.
Trent managed to grab one goal after the hour mark, but it was not enough as any of their pressure was met with a solid tackle, or a crucial interception.
The Gee-Gees will look ride their strong form as they finish off the regular next season against RMC (1-11-1) and Queen's (8-2-4). Both games will be held at Gee-Gees Field at 1 p.m., on October 20th vs RMC, and October 21st vs Queen's. Tickets are available at tickets.geegees.ca
