The Gee-Gees women's volleyball team travelled to Sherbrooke on Friday, where the team lost a closely contested 3-1 match, before closing the home portion of their fall schedule on Sunday with a loss to the Laval Rouge et Or in straight sets.
In Friday's matchup, Ottawa came out strong battling back-and-forth to secure a 26-24 win in the first set of the night. In the second, a quick 5-1 start for the Gee-Gee was responded to by Sherbrooke, who reversed a 15-12 Ottawa in five straight points to go up 17-15. Despite coming down to the wire at 24-23, the Vert et Or closed out the second set with a 25-23 win. In the third and fourth sets, Sherbrooke decisively closed out the match win, securing both sets by a 25-14 final score.
Grace McKale led the way for Ottawa with seven kills and three aces on the night, along with 11 digs on the defensive end.
On Sunday at Montpetit, the Rouge et Or defeated the Gee-Gees, flipping the script from a defeat at the hands of Ottawa earlier in the season.
Though score line may not show the competitive nature of the match, the Gee-Gees put forth a strong effort, but were unable to find consistency. After winning the first set 25-16, Laval were pushed by Ottawa in the second to 25-20 win. The final set was neck-and-neck, while the Gee-Gees held a 14-12 lead. A swing of seven consecutive Laval points was the undoing for Ottawa as the Rouge et Or won the set 25-17, clinching the match.
Outside of game action, it was Dig Pink day at Montpetit Hall, where as a part of Gee-Gees Think Pink efforts, funds and awareness was raised to support the Canadian Cancer Society.
Breast cancer is a battle the program is all-too familiar with, as numerous alumna have had their lives altered or taken by the disease.
"I said to our currently players that there's too many alumni, too many families directly affected over the history of this team," said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods.
"Most recently, my heart is just in my stomach for Eliane Belanger, who just passed away a few weeks ago. Eliane was one of our first successful engineers coming out of this program, she went to Sherbrooke and captained that team and won a national championship. She's been an inspiration for me, she's come back and done tutoring with the program, she was involved, and supportive. We lost her way too soon, that's what I'm thinking about mostly today."
The Gee-Gees will close out their first semester of action on the road at McGill on Friday night at 6:30.
