John Halvorsen will be inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame alongside Chantal Benoit, Rick Desclouds, Chris Phillips, and the 1968 and 1969 Ottawa Rough Riders teams in a ceremony at the Horticultural Building at Lansdowne Park, on May 31.
Halvorsen was one of the stars of the Gee-Gees national championship-winning teams in the late 1980's. The men's team climbed to the top of the podium in 1986, 1987, and 1990, with Halverson earning individual national championships in each year, as well as in 1988. He is the only student-athlete in U SPORTS history to win four men's cross country individual championships, as well as the only one to win three in a row.
The mechanical engineering graduate also competed in the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympic Games, running the 10,000 metres for his native Norway. He later completed his MBA at uOttawa.
Halverson spoke to Gee-Gees Graduating student-athletes in 2015, sharing his successes as a student-athlete and in his career. Halverson is the President and Race Director of Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, and has helped to build the massively successful annual races into an International Athletics Associations Federation (IAAF) Gold Standard event.
