The Gee-Gees won the 1985-1986 Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball championship on Saturday, March 1 at McMaster University.
Ottawa won the championship match in straight sets over Toronto, 15-3, 15-9, 15-10. The Gee-Gees landed 56 kills in the match, led by Sally Plows with 15 and Carol Shore with 13.
Ottawa was ranked fourth in the nation entering the conference championship tournament, having posted a 12-0 record in league play and a 24-11 record overall. The team travelled to Florida for a training camp Feb 20-26 in between the regular season and the championships.
The Gee-Gees advanced to the semifinal with wins over Windsor and York on Day One of the championship tournament, sweeping Windsor 15-8, 15-4, and 15-2 in the opening match. Ottawa needed four sets to defeat York, ranked tenth nationally, in the quarterfinal, 15-6, 13-15, 15-4, 15-8.
In the league semifinal, Ottawa dispatched Waterloo 15-4, 15-2, 15-5.
The team closed out the regular season portion of the schedule with three wins at home to secure the East Division. The Garnet and Grey took down four-time defending OWIAA champion York (5-15, 15-4, 15-3, 15-13) on Saturday and then winning a double-header with Ryerson (15-6, 15-3, 15-1) and no. 8-ranked Toronto (15-11, 15-10, 15-17, 16-14) on Sunday, which included a comeback from 14-6 against Toronto in the fourth set.
In all, the Gee-Gees won 26 of their 28 last matches heading into the nationals which were held in Moncton.
The team featured All-Canadian setter Leslie Irie, then in yer third year at uOttawa. Irie was also named the MVP of the OWIAA championship tournament. Sylvia Weihrer, a middle-blocker, was an honourable mention for All-Canadian. Weihrer, Irie, and Carol Shore were OWIAA All-Star team members. Neli Lozej was a championship tournament all-star. The team's head coach was Al Jeffrey.
