Don Gilbert was head coach of the Gee-Gees from 1971-1975 and was largely responsible for making the team a force to be reckoned with during those years. Gilbert led the Gee-Gees to win 38 of 47of their contests during his five seasons coaching the team.

Don Gilbert (born October 6, 1943) was a Canadian football player and coach. After a stellar career as a quarterback with the University of Buffalo, Gilbert, a native of Buffalo, played four seasons in the Canadian Football League for the Ottawa Rough Riders (1965-1967) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1968). His 83-yard return of an intercepted pass for a touchdown was the longest return in CFL history, and his outstanding defensive ability brought him All-CFL honors. Don also led the Rough Riders to the Grey Cup final in 1966.

His legendary Gee-Gees coaching career culminated in a perfect 11-0 season and a victory in 1975 Vanier Cup as he won Canadian College Coach of the Year honors. The Gee-Gees squad remains one of the greatest Canadian University teams ever assembled. The team had no less than five All-Canadians, and 21 players drafted into the CFL.
