Bio

A graduate of the University of Ottawa in 1955, the Honourable John Richard served for over a decase as Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal. Following an outstanding career with the Gee-Gees as an offensive and defensive back (1952-1954); John Richard went on to receive the gold medal from Osgoode Law School in 1959.

During his playing career, John played the entire football game on offense, defence and special teams. He led the Gee-Gees in punt and kickoff returns in 1953 and 1954. As team captain for Matt Anthony in 1953 and 1954, John’s talent and leadership were recognized with the Mgr. Prud’ Homme Trophy for Most Deserving Player in 1953.

The numerous appointments and awards that the Honourable John D. Richard has received include; Member (Lifetime) of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Vice Chairman of Canadian Judicial Council, chairman of the board of St. Vincent Hospital and past president and campaign chair of the United Way.

In 2012, he was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his leadership in the legal system. He is also noted for his charitable work with Reach Canada and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
