Sports Services hands out hardware

On April 1, the University of Ottawa Sports Services held its annual varsity awards banquet where student-athletes were recognized for their athletic achievements as a Gee-Gee during the past season.

Men's basketball player Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto, Ont.) and jumper Christopher Greenaway (Brossard, Que.) finished in a tie for the Director's Award as male athlete of the year.

Gibson-Bascombe finished up his five year uOttawa playing career as the Gee-Gees all-time leading scorer and first team all Canadian. This year, he had his best season ever with 443 points. He was also one of four OUA players to average more than 20 points per game, with 20.1 over 22 games.

Greenaway became the first uOttawa track athlete to win a major award when he was named the 2010 CIS male field athlete of the year and set a new national record in the long jump this past March. Greenaway was also named the recipient of the Hec Phillips Trophy as OUA's most valuable performer.

On the women's side, Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) was named female athlete of the year after an outstanding season for the Garnet and Grey. Sunley-Paisley was the OUA East player of the year, an OUA East first team all star and a second team all Canadian.

The President's Award is given to the male and female athletes that demonstrate excellence in athletics, academics and community service. Women's soccer player Brittany Harrison (Burlington, Ont.) was the 2010 female recipient, while Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alb.) from men's hockey team was the male winner.
