National Top Ten Update: Four Gee-Gees teams ranked this week
The Gee-Gees have four varsity teams ranked in the U SPORTS Top Tens this week, with women's soccer retaking the no. 1 spot in the national poll and the football team back in no. 9 position.
The women's soccer team spent just one week at no. 2 before reclaiming the top spot following Trinity Western's first loss of the season. Ottawa (9-0-2) is among six undefeated teams remaining in the Top Ten, and have outscored their opponents 33-4 through the 11 games played. Ottawa has three regular season games remaining, including a road date with Ryerson (4-4-2) this Sunday.
The Panda Game victory vaulted Ottawa to 4-2 on the season and back into the Top Ten after a week of honourable mention. The Gee-Gees are at home this Friday for the final regular season home game, hosting Windsor (1-6) with a chance to lock up a home playoff game depending on other results around the league. The Gee-Gees regular season finishes off next week, Oct. 19 with a trip to Western (7-0).
The men's hockey team stays at no. 4 for the second straight week after opening the season with a 3-2 win at McGill, another ranked team. The Gee-Gees are on the road again this week, visiting Laurier (0-2) and Waterloo (1-0).
The no. 5 ranked women's rugby team now awaits the identity of its playoff opponent. Ottawa's only two losses this year came to the no. 1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or, and the team finished second in the RSEQ Division A regular season standings. Under the new RSEQ format, the third and fourth place of Division A first face the first and second place finishers in Division B. Ottawa will host an RSEQ semifinal on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. The team is also hosting the U SPORTS National Championship Tournament, Oct. 30-Nov. 3.
