National Top Ten Update: Playoff weekend for ranked Gee-Gees teams
Three Gee-Gees teams remain ranked heading into a big weekend of postseason games, including the no. 1 ranked women's soccer team and the no. 9 ranked football team which will be playing on campus this weekend. Meanwhile, the no. 5 ranked women's rugby team gears up for a home national championship run by travelling to Laval for a Friday night RSEQ conference final. The men's hockey team is also ranked no. 4 this week.
Women's soccer finished the regular season with a 12-0-2 record, the seventh undefeated season in the team's 26-year history. With a 0.29 goals against average, the 2019 team is the fourth best defensive team in program history. The team also finished the season on a six-game shutout streak, with the last goal allowed coming on Sept. 22. The nationally no. 1 ranked Gee-Gees received a bye for the first round of the OUA playoffs and await their opponent (either Toronto, Ontario Tech, or Ryerson) for a quarterfinal match at Matt Anthony Field on Sunday, Oct. 27.
The football team finished fourth in the OUA regular season standings, earning a home playoff game for the third straight season. The Gee-Gees (5-3) host Waterloo (4-4) on Satuday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at Gee-Gees Field. The teams did not meet in the regular season and have not played eachother since 2017 when Ottawa defeated the Warriors 40-30. Ottawa has won the last ten games against Waterloo.
The women's rugby team will go for its sixth straight RSEQ championship on Friday, but for the first time they will have to travel to the championship game. It will be a battle between the national no. 1 and no. 5 ranked teams at Laval on Friday, Oct. 25. The game will be webcast on the Rouge et Or facebook page. Following the RSEQ Championship, both teams will compete at the U SPORTS National Championship at Matt Anthony Field, with national quarterfinal games taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 30. Semifinals are Friday, Nov. 1 and the championship game will be Sunday, Nov. 3. Tickets are on sale now, with the full schedule of events available on the ticketing website.
The men's hockey team had a tough opening home weekend but pulled through with an overtime win on Sunday against no. 5 ranked Guelph, to finish the weekend with a 4-1-0 record. The loss, to Western, dropped the Gee-Gees one spot in the national rankings to no. 4. The team is at home this weekend to face McGill on Friday night.
