National Top Ten Update: 2020 begins with five Gee-Gees teams ranked
Men’s swimming had the the biggest change this week, up five spots to no. 5 in the nation.
The new year is ushered in with five Gee-Gees teams ranked in the U SPORTS National Top Ten lists. All five teams have previously been ranked this season and men's swimming had the the biggest change this week, up five spots to no. 5 in the nation.
At the top of the list is the women's basketball team which remains ranked at no. 3 for the second straight poll. The team holds a 9-2 regular season record and begins January on the road at Laurentian and Nipissing. The Gee-Gees have won the last 18 straight games against Laurentian, dating back to 2011, and hold an 11-0 all-time record against Nipissing. The team will take on no. 7 ranked Queen's next week at home, where the Gee-Gees are undefeated this season.
In men's basketball, the Gee-Gees also hold steady at no. 4. The team was in action over the holiday break, winning the Olga Hrycak Classique at UQAM with three wins over McGill, Bishops, and the hosts. The team's northern road trip this weekend starts with a Top Ten showdown at no. 9-ranked Laurentian. The Gee-Gees have taken the last two meetings against the Voyageurs, including a 74-65 victory on Nov. 30. Ottawa will also play Nipissing this weekend, a team which they hold an 11-0 all-time record over.
The Gee-Gees swimming teams are both ranked again this week, with the men moving up to no. 5 while the women are ranked no. 9 this week. The team travelled to Florida over the holiday break for a training camp which included sessions in the outdoor facilities at Deerfield Beach Aquatic Centre, north of Miami. The teams resume RSEQ Cup competition next weekend at Laval.
The men's hockey team holds the no. 10 position this week, down from no. 7 after an overtime loss to Concordia on January 4. Ottawa, 12-4-2, is third in the OUA East right now just behind UQTR (14-4-2) with the Patriotes coming to town for two games this weekend. Saturday's game starts at 7 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. puck drop on Sunday, both at the uOttawa Minto Sports Complex.
