The Gee-Gees have five teams in the U SPORTS national top ten rankings this week, with slight changes in men's basketball and men's hockey rankings. The swimming rankings remained unchanged as the teams await a weekend of competition, while women's basketbal's two weekend wins allowed them to hold onto number three in the nation this week.
In men's basketball, a Friday night loss to Laurentian in Sudbury only cost the Gee-Gees one spot in the rankings as the Garnet and Grey fell from fourth to fifth this week, while the victorious Voyageurs advanced two places to no. 7 following the win. Ottawa, 10-3, holds second place in the OUA East standings heading into a home weekend with games against Queen's and Ontario Tech.
The no. 3 ranked women's basketball team (11-2) scored in the nineties for the fourth time this season, downing Laurentian 97-72 before finishing Nipissing 74-59 on the back of two big performances from third-year forward Brigitte Lefevbre-Okankwu who tallied 48 points this weekend. Ottawa has a Top Ten matchup this weekend at home against no. 7 Queen's (8-4) on Friday night.
The men's hockey team moved up two spots this week to no. 8 in the rankings, following a road win at RMC and a home split with UQTR. Ottawa, now 14-5-1, clinched a playoff spot last week and currently sits two points back of second place in the OUA East standings with a game in hand. The team also sports OUA's best penalty kill, with a 91.7 success rate and just six goals against.
In swimming the Gee-Gees remain ranked at no. 5 and no. 9 for the men's and women's squads, respectively. The Top Ten as a whole was unchanged from last week, and Ottawa heads into a weekend of competition which will include matching up with three other ranked men's teams and two other ranked women's teams at Laval for the third University Cup event of the season. It is the final league meet before the RSEQ Championships which will be held at Sherbrooke, Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
