Capital Hoops Classic Friday night to feature pair of Top Ten matchups
The Gee-Gees saw four teams rise in the national rankings this week after a weekend of strong results. Notably, the Gee-Gees women's basketball team holds the top record in the OUA conference at 17-2 and moved into the no. 2 spot in the national rankings this week. The team has won thirteen straight regular season games, including five over ranked opponents.
Ottawa's men's swimming team is also now in the national top four, having claimed second place at the RSEQ conference championships. Davide Casarin was named the RSEQ Swimmer of the Year and won six medals at the conference meet. The men's team was also ranked fourth last season entering the U SPORTS national championships. Women's swimming moved up one place this week to no. 8 in the nation.
The men's basketball team stays level at no. 6 this week after a pair of road wins over Windsor and Western. The Gee-Gees have a rematch with the Carleton Ravens this Friday at the fourteenth annual Capital Hoops Classic, this year at TD Place Arena. In the teams' first meeting of the year the Garnet and Grey were edged 69-65. It will mark the eighth straight year that the Capital Hoops Classic features a Top Ten matchup in the men's game. The women's game is also a Top Ten battle for the second straight year, with the Ravens women ranked ninth this week. Tickets are still available; student tickets are on sale in Room 102 at Montpetit Hall. General public tickets can be purchased online at TD Place's website.
The women's hockey team, riding a five-game winning streak, earned honourable mention in the Top Ten voting this week. Ottawa clinched a playoff win with a win over no. 1 ranked Concordia on Sunday, and are battling for second place in the RSEQ conference with three regular season games remaining and just three points separating second, third, and fourth place. The Gee-Gees face no. 7 ranked Montreal at the Minto Sports Complex this Friday night.
