National Top 10 Update: Women’s Basketball reaches No. 1
This marks the second time in program history that Ottawa is ranked first in the nation in women's basketball...
The Gee-Gees women's basketball team is ranked first in the nation this week as the previous no. 1 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies move down to no. 2. The Gee-Gees men's basketball team also moved up in the rankings this week, and now hold the no. 5 spot with one weekend remaining in regular season play.
The Gee-Gees swimming teams dropped one place each as other conferences held championships this week. The Ottawa men's team is now ranked fifth while the women are ninth this week. The team is sending a strong contingent of student-athletes to the U SPORTS National Championships in Victoria, B.C. next week. The event runs from February 20-22 at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool.
In women's basketball, this marks the second time in program history that Ottawa is ranked first in the nation; the only previous time was the final ranking of the 2018-19 season. Ottawa holds an 18-2 regular season record, one of three teams with that record at the top of the rankings. The Gee-Gees host Brock and McMaster at Montpetit Hall this weekend for the final weekend of the regular season. At no. 8 this week, Brock will be the fourth straight ranked team that Ottawa plays. Six OUA teams are ranked in this week's Top Ten. A pair of wins this weekend would ensure home court advantage throughout the OUA playoffs for the Gee-Gees.
In men's basketball, Ottawa pulls into number five this week after being ranked sixth last week. With a 16-4 record the Gee-Gees are looking to lock up the fourth seed in the OUA playoffs which would provide a bye through the first round.
The surging women's hockey team earned honourable mention again this week, but despite defeating no. 1 ranked Concordia for the second straight game, did not break into the official rankings.
