Varsity Award winners announced for 2020-21
Gee-Gees hockey senior Kevin Domingue was selected as the Career Achievement Award winner, headlining the Gee-Gees Year-End Award winners for the varsity teams.
Domingue shares the spotlight with Team MVPs and student-athletes recognized for their outstanding commitment to academics, community engagement, and True Sport Principles to close out the remarkable 2020-21 season.
"We know that there are incredible people on our varsity teams and this year was a challenge which they rose to meet," says Gee-Gees Athletic Director Sue Hylland. "Our award winners absolutely deserve to be recognized for what they accomplished this year. The incredible student-athlete spirit that we are proud to support at uOttawa is as strong as ever."
"I'd like to also recognize the impressive work done this year by our Athletic Therapy, Medical, and Strength and Conditioning teams," adds Hylland. "They truly went above and beyond and we are so grateful for their efforts."
Kevin Domingue returned to Ottawa in the fall hoping to complete his fifth year in a Gee-Gees uniform, but with the announcement that the OUA schedule would not take place he took his opportunity to join a professional team. Domingue joined the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL and is now playing in England with the Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL.
Domingue joined the Gee-Gees in 2016 and led the team in scoring in each of his four seasons, ultimately tallying 71 goals and 127 points in his 112 regular season games. In 2017-18 he ranked second in U SPORTS with 19 goals, and in 2019-20 he was second in OUA with 18. He holds the Gee-Gees all-time record for goals scored in the regular season and ranks third in career points. His 71 goals ranks second in OUA history, just two shy of breaking the record.
Domingue's individual stats contributed to the rise of the men's hockey program as a whole, and his playoff performances were also substantial. He scored in three elimination games in 2019-20 as well as in the OUA semi final and championship, helping to lift the team to a nationals berth and a national ranking as high as no. 3. He was a two-time league all-star and also contributed to the Gee-Gees community as a volunteer at minor hockey events, summer camps, and various campus events.
"Kevin's energy and will to win are exceptional and that is reflected in what he was able to accomplish on the ice," says Gee-Gees men's hockey head coach Pat Grandmaître. "Beyond the statistics and the goals he scored, he's also marked our program with his involvement in the community and his leadership. Thank you Kevin for all of your hard work and your passion that you brought to the program."
The Career Achievement Award recognizes the cumulative impact of an individual's athletic career at uOttawa, with the student-athlete making an indelible mark on the history of the Gee-Gees. Domingue joins Tori Wyman and Montana Champagne as the third recipient of the Career Achievement Award, which was presented for the first time in 2019.
