History
Montpetit Hall opened in October of 1972, was named after Méderic Montpetit who, in 1949 became the first director of the Institute of Physical Education after his work leading to its establishment. In 1965, the University of Ottawa received more than 50 million dollars to put towards reconsructing the campus. One of the main priorities of this effort was to have a gymnasium with high level basketball courts in the centre of the institution.
The women's volleyball team became a varsity program in conjunction with the constrcution of Montpetit Hall as it attracted national level players and coaches for training. In 2010, almost 50 years after its construction, Montpetit hosted an international volleyball match between Canada and Australia's senior men's teams.
