The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees will see exactly where they rank in the OUA pecking order when they take on the undefeated Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Gee-Gees Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
The Mustangs (6-0) are currently number one in the U SPORTS top ten rankings, and have occupied the top spot for the majority of the season.
The Gee-Gees (5-1) are ranked fifth by U SPORTS and come in to Saturday's contest on a five-game winning streak.
The OUA is wide open this year, with eight schools vying for only six playoff spots. There is no clear number two contender behind Western, but uOttawa are hoping to cement themselves as one of the conference's elite when they take on the Mustangs.
The Gee-Gees are heading into the matchup playing some of their best football in recent memory. Quarterback Sawyer Buettner has been a revelation under centre since taking over the starting role. He is undefeated as a starter and boasts a 13-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio over his first five appearances.
Running back Dawson Odei has also emerged as a force for uOttawa. The powerful and evasive back has rushed for over 100 yards in three of his last four games, finding the end zone four times in the process.
The Gee-Gees knew it would be no easy task replacing five-year starter Ty Cranston when the safety joined the Montreal Alouettes. Luke Griese is showing he is more than capable of filling the void. Griese and fellow defensive back Jamie Harry have combined for nine interceptions this season – the most picks for any pair of teammates in the nation this season.
The undefeated squad out of London, Ont. have been dominant this year, boasting by far the conference's best offence and best defence. However, it hasn't been all smooth sailing for Western – they needed overtime to defeat the Carleton Ravens in week one and only beat the Queen's Gaels by a field goal two weeks ago. Both of those games were road games for the Mustangs.
Saturday's matchup is an opportunity for the Gee-Gees to show they can compete with one of the country's best programs, and might even serve as a Yates Cup preview…
