RECAP: Ottawa closes 2023 season with quarterfinal loss at Queen’s
The Gee-Gees football team closed the 2023 season with an OUA quarterfinal loss to the Queen's Gaels in Kingston on Saturday.
In the second meeting between teams in two weeks, it was another grinding low scoring affair, however, Ottawa was unable to execute on their opportunities to steal the win.
It was a game full of unconventional scoring, with the teams combining for four rouges, four field goals, a safety, and only one touchdown between teams.
In all, Josh Janssen finished 13-24 passing for 172 yards. Charles Asselin finished with 62 yards rushing, while Maxim Malenfant had 52 yards receiving. On defence, Kevin Victome had 8.5 total tackles, while Patrick Cumberbatch had 6.5 total tackles and an interception.
For the Gaels, quarterback Russell Weir led the way with 222 yards, and running back Jared Chisari had 140 yards rushing.
"We made corrections from last week, didn't have the turnovers, had another great game on defence and special teams made plays. In the end, it came down to them making three or four more plays than us," said Gee-Gees head coach Marcel Bellefeuille.
"We just have to make those extra plays, as a head coach, that's all you can ask if you're teams in a position where they have to make a few plays. They put themselves in a good position, but unfortunately that's the difference in the game."
OUA All-Stars, Major Award Winners, and All-Canadians will all be announced in the coming weeks as the football season comes to a close with teams vying for the Vanier Cup.
