The Gee-Gees men's hockey team logged a dominant back-to-back weekend against their rival Carleton Ravens, earning two wins on Friday and Saturday. The first game was a closer affair, as it took two Ottawa goals to put the game away in the third period. The following night at the Carelton Ice House was more decerning with the Gee-Gees earning a 7-1 win.
Following the first matchup, head coach Patrick Grandmaître highly praised his special teams units as a difference maker in the win.
"The guys sacrificed a lot tonight. There could have been two penalties called per shift and some were. It is so hard as a coach, and as a player to stay level-headed in these kinds of games," he said. "We kept our composure and killed one penalty at a time. The plan was simply to have bodies in front of the crease and to put the puck on net."
The message carried over into the second game of the weekend and Ottawa's dominant attack and cooler demeaner showed in the rubber match.
Ottawa goalie Franky Lapenna shined in both outings, stopping a total of 55 Carleton shots out of 57 he faced on the weekend.
"We knew this was a big rivalry, and you could tell how much it meant to the team when you look at how many shots the guys were blocking," said Lapenna.
On Saturday, Luka Verreault was the hot hand, tallying four points after scoring two goals in the Friday matchup. The crafty forward totaled three goals and three assists over the weekend.
The rivalry weekend proved to be a busy time in the penalty box, as the teams tallied 108 total penalty minutes over the two games. Saturday's game alone saw five misconducts handed out.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will enjoy another home weekend where they host Queen's and RMC on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop against Queen's is set for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. against RMC. Tickets are available at tickets.geegees.ca
