The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men's rugby team are set to make their playoff debut as they take on McGill at Percival-Molson Stadium in the RSEQ Semi-Finals on Saturday, November 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
This is the first season Ottawa has made the playoffs since entering the RSEQ in 2018. The Gee-Gees finished third in the regular season with a 3-3 record, good for 14 points.
The Garnet and Grey clinched a spot in the playoffs with a convincing, 41-21 win over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Sunday, October 20. The team then had to scoreboard watch during the next week, but both the Montreal Carabins and Bishop's Gaiters lost their matchups, meaning Ottawa hung on to third spot.
Ottawa brings a well-rounded offence into the playoffs. Eleven different Gee-Gees scored tries this season, with four players finding pay dirt twice. Nat Maginnis led the team in scoring with 12 conversions and eight penalty kicks. His total of 48 points was the third-most in the conference during the regular season.
The Gee-Gees and McGill met on October 10 at Matt Anthony Field. McGill emerged 41-7 victors, with Antoine Guay scoring two of the red shirts' six tries.
Duncan Hladik scored for Ottawa and Sam Mace was named the game's MVP for Ottawa.
McGill finished second in the RSEQ. The lone blemish on their 5-1 record was a season-opening loss to the Concordia Stingers. They have outscored their opponents 88-24 over their last three matches.
Monty Weatherall leads McGill in scoring, while three players have registered three tries apiece. McGill have conceded the second-fewest points in the league this season.
The first place Stingers and fourth place Montréal Carabins meet at Concordia Stadium in the other semi-final at the same time. The RSEQ Final is yet to be scheduled and will be held at the ground of the highest-ranked remaining team.
