RECAP: Men’s rugby secures home playoff game with win over Stingers
The Gee-Gees men's rugby team defeated the Concordia Stingers 36-29 on the road Saturday afternoon.
It was a high-stakes game, with both teams looking to secure playoff spots. With the win, the Gee-Gees secured a home playoff game for the first time in program history. It is also the third straight season the Garnet and Grey will appear in the postseason.
Four different Gee-Gees found the try zone, with Evan Roy scoring three times. Roy, an Ottawa product, became just the third Ottawa player to record a hat trick in RSEQ play. Elias Hancock and Duncan Hladik scored four and three tries, respectively, on Sept. 11, 2021 against Sherbrooke.
Jamie Armstrong, Logan Harris and Connor Williams also scored, with Zak Campbell converting three tries.
Campbell caps off an impressive first season in Garnet and Grey. His 17 converts tie him for the most all-time in a single season with Armstrong, who also booted 17 last year. The Kimberley, B.C. product also finished third all-time in points scored in a single season with 42 (one try, 17 converts, one penalty). Only Armstrong (56 points in 2021) and Nat Maginnis (48 in 2019) rank higher.
Roy's five tries on the season led the team and are the second-most all-time in a single regular season by a Gee-Gee, trailing only Hladik's seven from last year.
Ottawa finishes the season with a 6-1 record, by far their most successful regular season in program history. They are second in the table behind McGill, who are also 6-1 but own an extra bonus point.
The Gee-Gees will face the ETS Piranhas (5-2) at home on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale at tickets.geegees.ca.
The program has never won a playoff game in their two previous trips to the postseason, but beat ETS 41-22 earlier this season.
