The Gee-Gees wrapped up the OUA Track and Field Championships at the University of Windsor with seven medals, along with an additional ten top 8 finishes and five personal bests on the weekend. The women's team finished the championships in sixth place while the men finished in seventh place.
Ty Coulter and Christina Hertner got the day started in the weight throw competition. Christina finished the competition in ninth with a throw of 12.94m. Ty was ranked third going into the competition, with a best throw of 15.74m on the day Coulter moved up in the ranks and won a silver medal, earning the Gee-Gees first medal on day two.
Tolu Makinde began day two of the heptathlon with the 60m hurdles, running a 8.60 adding 836 points to his total from day one, heading into the last two events with a total of 3300 points. In the pole vault Tolu cleared 3.71m, bringing his total to 3838 after adding 538 points from the pole vault, and holding on to second place. In the final event of the heptathlon competition Makinde ran a time of 2:56.88 in the 1000m race which added 695 points bringing his total to 4533, which is a personal best by 400 points. This new personal best secured won Makinde a silver medal in the heptathlon after two days of competition.
Stephanie Gould, a second-year athlete from Ottawa, Ontario ran in the 60m semi-final after qualifying in yesterday's preliminaries. Gould ran another personal best of 7.72 and qualified for the final, she sat in sixth place after the semi-final. In the finals Stephanie ran an identical time of 7.72, finish seventh overall in the event.
The women's team had a strong performance in 600m race, with three athletes finishing in the top 10. Sophia Skorenky finished tenth in a time of 1:35.05, and Maeliss Trapeau finished eighth with a time of 1:33.80. Madison Clarke a second-year, communications and social sciences student, ran the 600m in 1:31.62, which was good enough to earn her a bronze medal.
The Gee-Gees also earned a medal on the men's side of the 600m race when Stephen Evans, a fourth-year political science student ran 1:19.84, winning the silver medal.
In the first relay of the day the women raced to a fifth-place finish in the 4x200m, in a time of 1:43.18, Stephanie Gould, Sophia Skorenky, Madison Clarke and Emmanuelle Keogh competed in the race for the Gee-Gees. On the men's side of the relay Xavier Takam, Jesse Fortier, Tyler Dacosta, and Conor Ross competed for the team finishing the relay in 1:33.01 which put them in sixth place overall.
The last events of the championships were the 4x400m relays. Stephanie Gould, Madison Clarke, Maeliss Trapeau, and Sophia Skorenky competed for the Gee-Gees on the women's side while Tyler Dacosta, Stephen Evans, Jesse Fortier, and Xavier Takam competed on the men's side. The women finished fifth in a time of 3:50.70, while the men finished in a time of 3:32.21 also placing them in fifth.
The U SPORTS National Track and Field Championships will also take place at Windsor, March 8-10.
