This weekend, athletes from Gee-Gees track and field teams will be in Windsor, Ont. to compete at the OUA Championships.
Stephen Evans has had a very strong season, improving his personal bests each week to now rank fourth nationally and third in the OUA in the 600m with a time of 1:18.36. Evans was fifth in the 600m at the 2017 OUA Championships.
Gee-Gees sprinters Maeliss Trapeau and Madison Clarke face tough competition in the women's 600m, but the pair sit back-to-back at fourth and fifth in the OUA, both within striking distance of the podium. Clarke finished eighth at the OUA Championships last season, while this is Trapeau's first time competing at OUAs.
Keira Christie-Galloway is a rookie sensation in the women's 60m hurdles. The Ottawa native has established herself as a national up-and-comer after winning OFSAA and breaking high school records held by Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep.
Christie-Galloway competed at the 2016 IAAF World Under-20 Championships and was a member of Canada's bronze medal-winning 4x100m relay team at the Pan American Junior Championships in 2017. She comes into the OUA Championship ranked second in the nation and the OUA with a time of 8.38.
Tania Bambi, a U SPORTS bronze medalist in 60m hurdles last year enters the championships with the seventh best time in the OUA and tied for 11th in the nation with a time of 8.65. The Montreal native has proved her ability to excel at a high level and will be gunning to return to medal contention this season.
The Gee-Gees women's relay teams are also primed for solid performances on the weekend, with the 4x400m team ranking fifth in the nation, the 4x800m ranks third in the OUA and sixth nationally, with the 4x200m team ranking sixth in the OUA and 12th in the nation.
On the field side, the Gee-Gees will look for podium finishes from Ty Coulter in the weight throw and Christina Hertner, competing in shot put.
Coulter holds the school record in weight throw and will be looking to climb higher in their category at OUAs. With a season best of 15.87m, Coulter sits at third best in the OUA and seventh in the nation.
Hertner has had landmark throws this season, shattering team records and continually breaking personal bests. Her best mark of 12.51m ranks eighth in the OUA and ninth in the nation. Despite her place going in, her top throw is within a metre of medal contention.
Various other athletes will be present to represent the Gee-Gees at the Dennis Fairall Field House this weekend, vying for a chance to return to Windsor two weeks later for the U SPORTS Championships.
Recaps of both days will be posted on the Gee-Gees website and for other results and updates, follow at @geegees_trackxc on Twitter and Instagram.
