The Canadian Track and Field Championships returns to Ottawa this week, following up on an exciting 2017 event which featured many of Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The 2018 edition opens Tuesday, July 3 and runs until Sunday, July 8 at Terry Fox Stadium.
There are 20 current Gee-Gees and alumni slated to compete on Canada's biggest stage. Among the Gee-Gees to watch are:
2018 U SPORTS silver medallist Stephan Evans. The Political Science student will race in the 800 metre event which starts on Thursday night with men's heats at 7:15 p.m. Evans will look to improve on his time of 1:51.74 which netted him a 15th overall finish in 2017. Finals are scheduled for Sunday morning at 11:55 a.m.
Two-time Canadian Olympic Team member Oluwasegun Makinde. A three-time U SPORTS champion with the Gee-Gees relay teams from 2012-13, Makinde is in the men's 200m field with semifinal races on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. The final is slated for 6:20 p.m. and should also feature both Andre De Grasse and Aaron Brown.
The 2016 U SPORTS gold medallist in the 60m hurdles, Devyani Biswal. Biswal will compete in the 100 metre hurdles event which takes place on Saturday night. Semifinals are at 5:20 p.m. with the final at 8:50 p.m. The Master's student in Mathematics and Statistics placed seventh in the national final in 2017.
The first Gee-Gee to compete this week is decathlete Kevin Nault. Nault hails from Ottawa and had strong multi-event seasons for the Gee-Gees in both 2014-15 and 2015-16. Nault began competition on Tuesday and will wrap up Wednesday.
