RECAP: Speed shows at Sherbrooke
Several Gee-Gees scored top ten finishes, with the best results coming in the middle distances for both men and women.
The Gee-Gees track and field team was in Sherbrooke this weekend for the Vert et Or Invitational. Several Gee-Gees scored top ten finishes, with the best results coming in the middle distances for both men and women.
Marie-Eve Dahms was the standout on the day, running the 600m in a time of 1:35.46 for third place at the meet. That also ranks top five in the nation right now, just behind Gee-Gees team mate Sydney Smith, who did not compete this weekend. Dahms, a nutrition science student, is a team veteran in her fifth season. Stephanie Leask took eighth place for uOttawa, clocking in at 1:44.64.
In the 300m, Meghan Dundon placed sixth with a time of 44.38, with three other Gee-Gees runners behind her in the women's field of 24. For the men, Femi Ajayi was eighth in the 300 with a time of 38.17, ahead of two other Gee-Gees.
Quinn Lyness had a solid showing in the men's 600m, placing seventh with a time of 1:24.03 which is in range of his personal best in that event.
Tim Valentine secured a spot in the finals of the 60m with a time of 7.35 in his heat. He finished sixteenth overall in a field of 48.
Hannah Frazer ran to a second place finish in the 1000m, but her time of 3:08.19 is well back of the national leaders. André Alie-Lamarche is in a similar situation; he finished eighth in the 3000m with a time of 9:17.32 and Nic Roberts behind him in tenth in a field of 20.
Emily Sprague was sixth in the 60m hurdles heats, but did not run the final. Tyler Dacosta did run the hurdles final, placing sixth with at time of 8.97; his time of 8.89 in the heats was closer to his personal best of 8.74.
In the field events, Kyle Sprague was successful at 1.95 metres in the high jump, which ranks in the national top ten so far this season. He also recorded a distance of 6.45m in the long jump which was good for fourth place in Sherbrooke. Derek Brougham, uOttawa's heptathlete, threw 10.62 metres on his final attempt in the shot put.
Finally, Caroline Poirier was the top pole-vaulter at the event, winning with a clearance of 3.30m. Poirier holds the Gee-Gees team record in pole vault, with her personal best of 3.61 last season.

The Gee-Gees will return to the track this coming weekend with a home meet. The uOttawa Winter Invitational begins Friday evening with the 800m and 300m events, followed by an 11:30 start on Saturday with the 1000m runners and shot putters getting underway first.
