RECAP: Five medals for Gee-Gees at OUA Championships
The Gee-Gees finished sixth in the overall women’s team standings and ninth in the men’s standings.
The Gee-Gees track and field team claimed five medals at the 2020 OUA Championships held at the Toronto Track and Field Centre with Madison Clarke and Maeliss Trapeau each winning a pair of medals, and Caroline Poirier winning bronze in the pole vault.
Clarke was the first medallist of the event for the Gee-Gees, winning silver in the 1000 metres. Clarke held second place for most of the race and had the fastest final split time but could not quite catch Guelph's Sadie-Jane Hickson who crossed the line thirteen one-hundredths of a second ahead of Clarke.
The medal was the first in the 1000m for Clarke, who previously medalled at the OUA Championships in the 600m with a bronze in 2017-18. On Day Two, she upgraded to a silver in the 600m, again narrowly missing out on the gold. Jockeying for position with a pair of Guelph runners throughout the race, Clarke's final time of 1:30.58 was just four one-hundreths of a second back of the event winner.
Trapeau also stepped onto the podium in the 600m, taking bronze by overcoming a Guelph runner in the final 200 metres. The night before, Trapeau teamed with Holly Hicks, Sydney Smith, and Marie-Eve Dahms to win bronze in the 4x800m relay. The time of 9:06.24 was a season-best for the Gee-Gees.
For Caroline Poirier, it took another personal best to step onto the OUA podium and she achieved it with a 3.76 metre clearance in the pole vault. Poirier was successful on her first attempt at the height after needing two attempts to clear 3.71 metres. Poirier set a new Gee-Gees record with the height and she is the first uOttawa representative to win a women's pole vault medal at the OUA Championships.
Also in the field, Kyle Sprague placed fourth in the high jump as he cleared 1.95 metres to match his personal best, and Emily Sprague was fourth in the pentathlon with a personal best of 3341 points, moving up from sixth place last season. Other top eight finishes for uOttawa included Rebecca Brennan in sixth in the women's 3000m and ninth in the 1500m, and Pernille Lund making the semifinals of the 60m.
The Gee-Gees finished sixth in the overall women's team standings and ninth in the men's standings.
