The U SPORTS #5 Gee-Gees women's basketball team (7-1) used an offensive explosion to win their seventh straight game on Saturday night. The Gee-Gees took down the Brock Badgers (3-6) by a 93-53 final margin at Montpetit Hall.
As they have done for much of the season, the Gee-Gees used their defence, which ranks among the top in the country, to gain an early lead as they ended a low scoring first quarter ahead 14-7.
The game opened up more in the second quarter on the offensive end, as each team was able to connect on three shots from deep and were able to cut down on the turnovers that plagued the first quarter. The Gee-Gees took a 37-25 lead into the halftime break, thanks to a balanced scoring effort, and never looked back.
After a couple of evenly played minutes to start the half, the Gee-Gees went on a 21-6 run over the last 7:31 of the third quarter to increase their halftime lead. That scoring run also included ten straight points from third year guard Amélie Hachey, who averaged a team high 16 points in the wins this weekend.
It was much of the same for the Gee-Gees in the fourth quarter as they were able to extend their lead even further, while getting valuable minutes for some of their younger players and resting some of their key players down the stretch.
In regards to the second half offensive explosion, Gee-Gees head coach Andy Sparks was especially pleased with the balance his team showed offensively, thanks to their depth, which Sparks sees as one of the team's biggest strengths. Six different players scored eight points or more the Gee-Gees in the game.
Although the season is young, the Gee-Gees are averaging over 15 more points per game this season compared to last. In particular Coach Sparks, pointed out that the return of fifth year guard Sarah Besselink, who missed all of last season with a major knee injury, has been a key reason for the team's offensive growth this season.
"Having her back is huge because of her senior leadership, but also because it adds another scorer into our rotation," he said.
Notable performers from tonight's game included Hachey, who had a game high 20 points, and Angela Ribarich who finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks.
"I feel like this is all about experience," said Hachey. "We're pretty much the same team as last year, but now we're just stronger, we know each other better, and it just means we play well together."
The Gee-Gees are on the road next weekend for their final games of the calendar year as they take on the Guelph Gryphons (2-6) on Friday night, and the Algoma Thunderbirds (4-4) on Sunday afternoon. Both games will be streaming live on OUA.tv.
