The U SPORTS third-ranked Gee-Gees women's basketball suffered their first regular season loss since late October as the fourth-ranked Ryerson Rams took home a 71-63 win in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. Ottawa's loss has them tied for first place in the OUA East with both Ryerson and Carleton at 10-2.
Fifth-year guard Sarah Besselink led the way for the Gee-Gees with 16 points, 4 rebounds, and two assists. Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu and Amélie Hachey scored 11 points each in the loss.
As a team, the Gee-Gees shot a well below average 34.3 per cent from the field, and were heavily out-rebounded by the Rams by a 51-33 margin. The only stat that was heavily in the Gee-Gees' favour was the turnover margin, the Rams turned the ball over 21 times, however Ottawa was unable to capitalize fully despite scoring 14 points off of those turnovers.
The Gee-Gees battled through a first half that had Ryerson holding a 40-34 lead at the break. Their lead proved to be the catalyst for victory with only two points separating the teams in the second half. The Gee-Gees pushed the Rams hard in the final minutes of the game, but they were ultimately unable to stage enough of a comeback to tie the game.
The Rams had five players score in double figures, led by Hayley Robertson who scored 16.
Ottawa will be on the road once again next weekend as they travel to Northern Ontario to take on Nipissing and Laurentian on Friday and Saturday.
