In OUA basketball action on Friday night at Montpetit Hall, the U SPORTS sixth-ranked Gee-Gees women's basketball team (13-2) defeated the York Lions (6-9) 88-58, marking their third straight win as they remain deadlocked atop the OUA East standings.
The Gee-Gees came out firing early on as they rushed out to a 27-13 lead after the first quarter. In that opening frame, the Gee-Gees spread the ball out very well, recording an assist on each of their eight field goals, while turning the ball over only once. As they have done all season, the Gee-Gees suffocated their opponent's offence early, holding the Lions to just 26.3 per cent shooting, never allowing them to get into a rhythm.
While the Lions were able to find their offensive flow in the second quarter, the Gee-Gees remained consistent on the offensive end of the floor and were able to take a comfortable 16-point lead into the halftime break.
Throughout the second half, the Gee-Gees once again asserted their dominance on both ends of the floor, controlling every part of the game. In the third and fourth quarters, the Gee-Gees held the Lions to just 32 per cent from the field while giving up just two three pointers.
Much of the Gee-Gees offence in the second half came as a result of their tenacious defensive play, as they were able to force the Lions into twelve turnovers and turn those into transition opportunities.
After the game, Gee-Gees head coach Andy Sparks was very complimentary of all five starters as they each scored in double digits.
"We got great scoring distribution from those five and that makes us very difficult to guard," he said. "We have a nice balanced attack and I think teams are having trouble with that."
Leading the way for the Gee-Gees all night was Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus with a stat sheet stuffing 17 points, eight assists, eight rebounds, and three steals. As well, the inside tandem of Angela Ribarich and Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu continues to give opponents headaches, as they contributed a combined 29 points and 18 rebounds.
The Gee-Gees are back in action Saturday night as they host the Queen's Gaels (9-6) at Montpetit Hall. The game tips off at 6p.m. and will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
