RECAP: #2 Gee-Gees defeat Ontario Tech, fall to #6 Queen’s
The Gee-Gees powered to a win against Ontario Tech, but dropped a close contest to #6 Queen's on Saturday.
NOV. 8 AT ONTARIO TECH
On Friday, the Gee-Gees defeated Ontario Tech 98-51 in Oshawa. The Ridgebacks, who are in their inaugural season, were overmatched against the veteran nationally-ranked Gee-Gees team.
Ottawa took control of the game right out of the gate, building a 21-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The first half was a defensive showcase for Ottawa, as they held Ontario Tech to 11-points and a .130 shooting percentage at the half.
The big lead allowed for the Gee-Gees to get different players on the court with every player dressed seeing time on the court in the second half.
Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu led the Gee-Gees with a double-double. She contributed substantially on both ends of the floor, scoring 22 points, adding 11 rebounds, and four steals on defence.
NOV. 9 AT QUEEN'S
Saturday saw the Gee-Gees go up against U SPORTS sixth-ranked Queens, losing their first game of the season by a 81-75 finally tally.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from the start with both teams trading runs in the early goings. The Gee-Gees secured a nine-point lead at halftime.
Angela Ribarich was dominant in the paint scoring 12 points in the first half. Brooklynn McAlear-Fanus and Katherine Follis chipped in nine points each of their own.
Tides turned in the second half, with the Gaels responding resoundingly in the final two frames to secure the win.
Fouls would end up hurting the Gee-Gees as four key players would have to spend time on the bench due to foul troubles. With Follis fouling-out with a few minutes remaining, the Gee-Gees lost a key presence and the Gaels took advantage.
Queen's would finish the game with 15 more free throw attempts than Ottawa, with free throws playing a strong hand in spelling defeat for the Gee-Gees.
First-year guard Natsuki Szczokin led the Gee-Gees with 18 points off of the bench. Szczokin showed her skill and confidence and was a bright-spot throughout the game. The Barrie, Ont. native played well beyond her collegiate experience with multiple impressive scoring touches around the rim including a coast-to-coast and-one in the fourth quarter.

The Gee-Gees will hit the road again next weekend to play Guelph and Algoma on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Both games will be available to stream on OUA.tv
