RECAP: Women’s basketball drops nail biter to Ravens in OUA East semis
Despite a furious fourth quarter comeback, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women's basketball team fell in their OUA East semifinal matchup with the Carleton Ravens by a 61-58 score Saturday night at the Ravens Nest.
Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu led the Gee-Gees in scoring with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Carleton got the game started on the right foot by springing out to an 8-2 lead and leading at the first quarter break 17-13.
The game was tight through the second quarter, with both teams combining for just 20 points. The Ravens, who earned the right to host Saturday's game by virtue of a tiebreaker, held a 28-22 advantage at recess.
The home team continued their strong play in the third quarter, but the final frame saw the Gee-Gees mount a comeback. Strong play in the paint from Oksana Gouchie-Provencher, buttressed by some clutch three pointers from Nadine Katumbayi and Natsuki Szczokin tied the contest for the first time since tipoff.
Carleton regained control down the stretch however, dropping a series of treys of their own before sealing the game with free throws.
In addition to Lefebvre-Okankwu, Katumbayi (12 points) and Savannah Provo (11 points) where into double figures for the Gee-Gees.
Kali Pocrnic paced Carleton in points with 12.
