The Gee-Gees women's basketball team continued their unblemished start to the OUA season sweeping the weekend with wins over Western and Windsor at Montpetit Hall.
On Friday, Ottawa downed the previously undefeated Mustangs 79-63, before routing Windsor 78-44 on Saturday night.
Against Western, the Gee-Gees conceded an early lead to the Mustangs before powering to an outstanding 31-5 second quarter, which proved to be the difference-maker in the matchup.
Despite the Mustangs outscoring the Gee-Gees in the second half, Ottawa was able to maintain their lead and quell Western's comeback efforts. In all, the Gee-Gees shot 44.4 percent from three, hitting eight three-pointers in the win.
Fifth-year forward Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu led the way for Ottawa with 21 points and eight rebounds. Oksana Gouchie-Provencher, Nadine Katumbayi, and Brianna Iannazzo each scored 10 points, with Gouchie-Provencher and Katumbayi contributing eight and seven rebounds respectively.
On Saturday, for the team's Shoot for the Cure game, the Gee-Gees powered over Windsor, who were fresh from an overtime loss to Carleton on Friday night.
The game was out of reach for the visiting Lancers early as Ottawa amassed a 23-11 lead after the first quarter, which eventually grew to a 43-20 lead at the half. Ottawa held Windsor to only 25.9 per cent shooting from the field and 11.1 per cent from three in the win.
Ottawa won both the rebounding and turnover margin and hit eight threes en route to a lead that grew to as many as 37 early in the fourth frame.
Katumbayi led the way with 16 points, while Gouchie-Provencher had 14 points and eight rebounds. Lefebvre-Okankwu turned in a double-double performance with 13 points, and 12 rebounds.
"This weekend was huge. Now we're 7-0 in the conference," said Gouchie-Provencher. "I think we just have to keep going, finish this last weekend hard and show the country what we're made of."
Now the Gee-Gees will turn their attention to closing the semester off strong with a final home matchup with Algoma, before taking to the road to play Brock. With their undefeated record, the Gee-Gees have found several ways to win games. Something that is invaluable at this stage of the season.
"We put together a new offensive structure this year, so I knew it was going to take some time to understand all of the reads, but these games are allowing us to execute better and it's coming together," said Gee-Gees head coach Rose-Anne Joly.
The Gee-Gees will host Algoma at Montpetit Hall on Friday (Dec. 2) at 6 p.m. before taking to the road for a Sunday matchup with Brock in St. Catharines. Tickets for Friday's game are available at tickets.geegees.ca and both games will be streaming live on OUA.tv
