The Gee-Gees women's basketball team travelled to Waterloo and opened the second half of the OUA regular season earning two wins against Laurier and Waterloo. With the two wins, Ottawa improved their OUA record to a spotless 11-0 this season and are set to rise in the U SPORTS Top 10 after the dominant wins on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the Gee-Gees defeated the Laurier by a final tally of 73-46. Ottawa dominated underneath the basket in the win, outrebounding their opponents 46-16, en route to 34 points in the paint.
Returning from a wrist injury sustained in November, Alana Renon led the way for the Gee-Gees with 17 points, to go along with eight rebounds and three assists. Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu was the other Ottawa player in double-figures with 14 points, while adding eight rebounds on the night.
Nadine Katumbayi also logged a complete performance against the Golden Hawks, finishing with nine points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
On Saturday afternoon, Ottawa capped off the weekend sweep with a 80-52 win at Waterloo. The Gee-Gees built a lead as high as 42 going into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Warriors 27-8 in the second, and 29-11 in the third.
In the win, the Gee-Gees hit eight three-pointers, four of which came from Natsuki Szczokin, who led the team with 21 points, along with three rebounds and two steals.
The Gee-Gees star forwards Lefebvre-Okankwu and Oksana Gouchie-Provencher made their presense known in the win, with Lefebvre-Okankwu adding 16 points and seven rebounds, while Gouchie-Provencher posted 15 points and eight rebounds.
In all, Ottawa turned Waterloo's 21 turnovers into 29 points, and held Waterloo to just 27.5% shooting from the field.
Up next, the Gee-Gees will return home to host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and Guelph Gryphons in a rare Saturday-Sunday weekend at Montpetit.
